TIL that The New Yorker spells "coördinated" with an umlaut over the second o. (Is this the only word in American English with an umlaut?)

@danothebeach Sure. It’s just a diaeresis, to indicate that two vowels are pronounced independently rather than as a diphthong. -

@danothebeach They’re not often taught. My first encounter was in an Advanced Algebra text published in the 60’s (“coördinates”).
