Im just wondering if this format derivative (from USD) is really ready for prime time? I found this article very enlightening: http://nickporcino.com/posts/last_mile_interchange.html …

The software’s not fully-baked, but I think there are indications that USDZ is a good format. I can’t think of a more solid foundation to build on, and USDZ pares away some of the complexity of USD while remaining open to future development.

What I haven't read is a real comparison of glTF vs USDZ, especially in relation to it's use on the web. IMO, glTF already wins due to the removal of unnecessary complexity, and of course, with it having JSON as a part of it's structure.

glTF is a non-starter. It’d be nice to have support for it in ModelIO, but its schema is a strict subset of what SceneKit already needs, to say nothing of future demands, so you’d be stuck with ever-more vendor-specific extensions from day 0.

I saw on one of the sessions that `xcrun` has a command to convert .obj to .usdz. I’m curious to see if that works already.
-
It works, but it’s rather tedious, since you have to supply each texture map as a separate argument (since OBJ doesn’t support PBR materials). Also, I only have the source asset in glTF format, and going glTF->OBJ loses the animations.
-
Same challenge. Trying to find an efficient way to bring in obj models without having to reassign the maps in Scenekit each time. Is there possibly a way to automate the process of loading the maps into the usdz shader upon importing the obj file?

Any luck? I was also curious about this ( as I'm sure many other folks are )
