A bit of a random question, but I figured you’d be the right person to ask… Do you know any good resources for learning Metal from an image processing perspective (à la CIImage) rather than a 3D compositing perspective?

I have a new article series on MPS image filters coming out soon; would that be useful? Do you need info on custom kernels?
@gpu3d and@carolinebegbie’s forthcoming book might have some insight? -
Looking forward to it! Custom kernels, tiling large data, efficient use of IOSurface, understanding Metal’s own render pipeline, etc… I don’t have much experience with other GPU frameworks to draw analogies from unfortunately, so many resources feel pretty daunting :/
-
That’s a tall order! I’m into it—can we talk soon about your use cases? I’m interested to explore intuitive ways to teach this stuff!
-
It’s probably the reason it’s taken me so long to dive deeper into this kind of stuff :P Are you going to be in San Jose for WWDC next week? I’d love to talk more :)
-
I am not! I’m currently living in Thailand, but would love to set up a Hangout or similar

-
Definitely! I’ll get back in contact after next week’s craziness is settled! Thank you for the suggestions so far :)

hello,
-
Just trying to read the tea leaves for fun and profit.
-
I still dream if getting us to ray tracing one day. Maybe that day is coming closer.
-
Y’all could really benefit from a hybrid solution yesterday
-
We need a solution yesterday? Yes, a thousand times yes. But you mean “hybrid” between what and what?
-
Rasterization with a B(SS)RDF for opaques, raytracing for translucents/optics.

With hardware to power it please! (It’s just about viable for some cases with current hardware, with some acceleration it could be very interesting!
-
Right? Can’t be the Caustic IP, but there are plenty of ways to skirt that for fun and profit…

That would be a swift and objective announcement!

I guess we’ll C if it’s in the AppleScript
-
with a heavy Metal soundtrack
-
Well, it's not long until we see what they've actually been Cooking.
-
it still feels longer than 16.7ms until then… an eternity!
