Exactly. It’s not the same parties. So much of this discussion has been eliding lessons of authoritarianism 101.

(Plus, of course the bureaucrat/party side has their own scientists, so the assumption they'd be too stupid to distinguish things is not warranted. There are scientists wrapped up with the authoritarians, too. But *most* regular scientists are just unfree, not unscientists).

We don't actually know this. They had to email a request for deletion. Isn't it possible the scientists deleted it with the intention of replacing it with an improved version, and the government's instruction everything had to be approved hit before they were able to replace?

The researchers also published their initial preprint AFTER Chinese officials began centrally approving studies. Based on Jesse's analysis, the sequences were also made public in the NIH database well after oversight began...

And the peer-review study, with all of the sequences, was published after China began screening all papers. Quite the coverup...
