    She walked into the caf for lunch, laughing w/ coworkers. I rushed past w/ food for my breastfeeding wife to learn details of our baby’s emerg heart surgery. She yelled, “what’s ur problem?!” Lady, u work . Assume everyone is a parent having their worst day

    We were in a hosp elevator, you were carrying a teddy bear. You were very stoic. Did they just have a baby? Was their baby in surgery? Was their baby having a test? Did their child just succumb to their disease? You never quite know what other people are going through

    I’m not thinking policy, but rather a mechanism for helping our pts navigate the system. Or perhaps a streamlined, transparent approach to self-pay. I suspect most just pay whatever the insurance rates are w/o much deeper inquiry, but prob don’t know any better

    While I was previously aware of this sort of nonsense in our line of work, this thread👇 really crystallizes the utter insanity of our health insurance/payments system. There has to be a better, simpler way.

    Them: Your copay for the CT scan will be $500 Me: Whaaaat? No way. Who'd you talk to at my insurance? Them: ... Me: What's the cash self-pay rate, if I don't use insurance? Them: Uh, $300 Me: ...

    "[A]uthors are required to make materials, data, code, and associated protocols promptly available to readers without undue qualifications." Unless it's a super glamorous paper that will get tons of press coverage for Nature, in which case don't worry.

    Congrats to Google, but let’s not forgot the team from NYU who last year published better results, validated on more cases, tested on more readers, and made their code and data available. They just don’t have the PR machine to raise awareness.

    Wow. The doctors are the PROBLEM? Sigh. Yet I’ll still give up my Christmas to go take care of people (even some that feel this way). And I’ll make far less money than an insurance executive doing it. And if you can’t pay? I’ll still provide care...

    The biggest lie in health care politics is that it's just the insurers who are keeping prices high throughout the system. It's not. The providers are the bigger problem, and they're harder to fight because people trust them.

    In the book’s context, this makes sense. Self care is vital during cancer tx and - in my personal exp - continuing to work can provide purpose/meaning. But this could also send the wrong msg. Sometimes people need time off. I’ve been there too

    My institution had us read When Breath Becomes Air and emphasized the importance of the author's continued working as a resident with metastatic lung cancer. Mandatory modules and canned videos are not true wellness.
