Turned on SOTU to see Trump giving Limbaugh the Medal of Freedom. Turned it off immediately. That’s enough of that.

1.3 million. That’s how many fewer new Trump has created in his first 35 months in office vs. Obama’s last 35 months.

Asked about Sen. Susan Collins saying he’d learned a lesson, Trump told the anchors he did not agree. He had done nothing wrong. “It was a perfect call.”

With today's close, the DJIA is up 45% since President Trump's Inauguration Day. On the same day in President Obama's first term, 2/4/12, the DJIA was up 62% from his Inauguration Day.

(True, the caucuses are not government and its software is not government software, but it’s a timely example and also this is a distinction that’s basically lost on the general public.)

Now the narrative is that the Iowa caucuses are broken. (Which, I mean, they *are*, but not in the ways that this narrative is about.) Apple, Microsoft, and Google have taught people to have suitably high expectations for tech. Government can and must meet these standards.

Did the Iowa caucuses work, in terms of doing the thing that the Iowa Democratic Party intended them to do? Looks like it! But it doesn’t matter because the tech was broken. It would have worked way better with a phone bank and results called in — old-school tech.

Public faith in government has eroded in the US, in part because we have a political party that is premised on the idea that all government is bad, but in part it’s because the tech intermediation is ancient and broken. We need to fix that software for gov’t to work for people.

By and large, government works great in the US, but it works great in the background. When people actually have to work with government directly, and they have bad experiences, they conclude that government is bad. Terrible software is often the source of those bad experiences.

Many public interactions with government are intermediated by software, either directly (renewing your driver’s license online) or indirectly (the software used by Medicaid call center workers). That software is usually bad or broken. This leads people to believe gov’t is broken.

Trump keeps saying his Ukraine call was "perfect" and impeachment a "hoax" and yet GOP Senators insist he's learned from it. Collins is latest to push this idea:

I *guarantee you* that Trump is currently in the process of soliciting or receiving foreign assistance in the election.

In 1992 I thought that “Chess Piece Face” was a pretty solid TMBG song. Now, I’m not saying I was wrong, but I am saying that this is no longer my position on the matter.

I used to own a whopping three TSLA shares. But Elon Musk is an ass and Tesla treats their employees terribly, so I sold…two. As you can see, I’m pretty conflicted about Tesla.

So that leaves Tesla. The company is run by a union-busting lunatic, with terrible working conditions building cars of inconsistent quality. Terribly, they’re our best hope for transitioning away from internal combustion engines. Because they’re not beholden to dealers.

Car dealerships are stupid-powerful. Every state has a bajillion laws and regs that make them a powerful lobby. Automakers have to sell through their dealers. Unless something changes drastically, there’s no real scenario in which the major automakers sell a lot of electric cars.
