    (3/3) The main place to mine for amethyst in Egypt was at Wadi el-Hudi. This example, now at the Metropolitan Museum (, 22.1.272), was found in a Middle Kingdom tomb at Lisht, an important mortuary site at that time.

    (2/3) Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz and interestingly, the darker the stone, the more prestige the object held. Amethyst was incorporated into the jewelry worn by elite Ancient Egyptians yet it was controlled by royal workshops.
