Sadly, on Sunday we were forced to abandon the drill and head back to the safety of Rothera with a fierce storm about to barrel through Sherman Island (pun intended). The final depth reached was 323.3 m, still an acheivement and in less than 6 days of drilling!

Wacswain is still a European Union project today, and proud of it.

Some positive news today as well - Mackenzie reports that the CFA processing of the Skytrain core has passed 100 metres (actually 114) today. Meanwhile Rob and team are still working on freeing the drill, although this photo shows looking a bit despondent..

The team at Sherman report that the drill has stuck at 322 m, just 100 m from bottom. They are working on freeing it but currently not hopeful. These things can happen in real field science but means we may not get as much as hoped from this extra site.

With much more difficult weather today we carried on to 280 m. Everything and everyone still behaving but more bad weather to come so send us warm and dry thoughts for last few days of drilling

We’re halfway there! We finished Sunday drilling at 215 m, halfway to the bedrock which we think is at 430 m. The joys of rapid drilling!

At Sherman: 58 m Friday, made it to 133 m at end of day 2 (despite 25 knot winds and drifting snow all day) with all equipment and team working well together. All milestones celebrated: 100 m, 100 drops of drill, first full ice box, etc....

Sorry everyone from Eric. I mistyped what Isobel sent yesterday. It was 27 degrees in the core barrel, not a canine crush.

Team started drilling and learning the ice sampling system this morning. Rob and continued to 12 m in good drilling conditions (much better than yesterday when Rob measured temp of 27 dogs inside drill barrel!)

Day 3 at Sherman island, we now have all of our equipment and are getting the winch, mast and drill set up to hopefully start drilling very soon. We've been spoilt with blue skies every day so far, hoping this lasts!

And meanwhile the analysis of ice from Skytrain Ice Rise is now seriously underway. Mackenzie, Helene and Jack, along with Charlie preparing ice strips, have reached 60 metres in the analysis. Ice is melted on a hotplate and then goes to numerous analytical instruments.

The last cargo, including the winch for the Rapid Access drill, arrived at Sherman Island yesterday.

Exciting prgress at Sherman Island already. Our estimate, based on extremely sparse IceBridge airborne radar data was that our chosen site was 431 m thick. Now Robert has used ApRES radar system at the site and gets 428 metres. Very happy with that.

The three of us are now on site in Sherman Island. Due to logistics of refuelling, we offloaded small amount of cargo at the Castle depot with the Traverse. Weather looks good enough to get the remainder of the cargo in tomorrow. Sherston Island has green dot Sh on map.

From , Rob and Dieter in the field: We left Rothera early Sunday and got depoted at Sky Blu while they flew cargo. Bad weather yesterday but hoping to get all of us plus remaining cargo into Sherman Island in 4 flights today.

We have arrived in Rothera! Very busy with training, testing equipment and sorting cargo. Should be reunited with Rob this weekend, then onwards to Sherman Island!
