If you're not willing to admit that the poor are often awful people then you're not willing to admit that poverty is bad

Ken Loach's benefit claimants are the noble savages of modern Britain. Hard-working and honest despite (perhaps because of) their meagre conditions. Why should change anything? Show us that poverty breeds alcoholics, wife-beaters and child-abusers

Dickens has been accused of sentimentality, and specifically of sentimentalising and romanticising the poor. People who say this are familiar with the good-hearted Cratchets, but seldom mention Mrs Gargery or the alcoholic and abusive brick-layer of Bleak House
