i'm much more sympathetic to people who use the word "degeneracy" because their lives are hopeless and they need a scapegoat. Very averse to neurotypical puritans though, which aren't necessarily right wing

I think an intense preoccupation with "degeneracy" sometimes masks a perverse attraction to it. Imagine an old aristocrat endlessly scrolling through Pornhub cursing under his breath. You get the picture

Oh, those have always existed. It's just that when we discover that it took place in the Victorian period we assume the modesty must have been masking a whole underbelly of sexual experimentation. In reality it's very unlikely that they did that sort of thing as often as we do
