I really think you underestimate how much the average person gleams their sense of self and their idea of communal conduct from television. Most people are an invention of television, not the other way around.
A heightened awareness of TV's bad influences makes absolutely no difference to the viewer. TV has even protected itself against this new consumer awareness by blanketing everything with a nudge-nudge wink-wink irony about its own trashiness. Now the viewer is given a false sense

of being "above it" even though she continues to watch and absorb from a supposed ironic distance. There is no way to avoid the influential effects of television save for switching it off
