Is an identity which is reliant on machines a real, sustainable one? Is it just a product of industrial society? Can it be both?

Well depending on how abstractly you're willing to define 'machines', I guess oral tradition can be considered exempt, but as soon as there's more to it, you definitely have a reliance on machines Sustainability is precluded by the inevitability of change and death (:
