When procuring a pretty modest set-up for myself I got talking to a store employee who advised me to "never buy any cables which come in a box," to "suspend my wires to prevent interference" and to "coat my room with foam pads"

He was pretty happy to get to show me a picture of his own, personal set-up; a room he had put aside for the purpose of listening; a system of gold-plated wires and high-end equipment which came withe the implicit guarantee that you would finally HEAR the music; finally enjoy it

This was all done with a strange mixture of pride and eagerness to have that pride validated, like a parent introducing their wildly talented but socially-cripped child to another parent. He was about sixty years old and couldn't have been making more than 22-24K p/a
