Seriously though, this is a very real issue. No sooner have I started reading anything vaguely philosophical do I start mentally listing everything I should have read before, in chronological order, all the way back to the Old Testament

Maybe. The Republic and some knowledge of the pre-Socratics is not un-useful since many of the concepts proposed are repeated ad nauseum throughout all of philosophy
