Seriously though, this is a very real issue. No sooner have I started reading anything vaguely philosophical do I start mentally listing everything I should have read before, in chronological order, all the way back to the Old Testament

As I recall... Quine was of the opinion you could just engage with current ideas and used to say studying old stuff was 'history of philosophy' rather than philosophy itself, obviously there are different attitudes on the question
