He was not an academic, or even particularly intelligent. He was a disinterested stander-by who was inevitably drawn in by his moral objections. The result is an author indiscriminately hostile to anything he perceives as mean, evil or insincere.

"Indiscriminate" in that he is not bound to an ideology; not bound in that he has made little effort to understand them. This gives him the idiot's freedom to flit back and forth, thwacking whomever he finds objectionable while making no effort to be consistent
