Remembering the weird book trend circa ~ 2005 where every bookshop had a shelf dedicated to child abuse memoirs. What was going on there?

A book called "A Child Called It" was very popular and then, soon after, a whole slew of memoirs were released with titles like "Moving Forward" and "Daddy, No!" The British public couldn't get enough of them

I always had the upsetting suspicion that many people took pleasure in reading about these private atrocities. "Misery Porn" is the term, I believe

I wasn't aware of it, but you see this combination of moral outrage and titilation in practically all media once you start to notice it
