“Terrorists use trucks to kill, so why don’t you ban trucks?” That has to be the silliest of all the silly arguments of the gun crazies. Trucks are designed & used for other things. Like transporting stuff. Military rifles are designed & used for nothing other than killing.

So the government should have the monopoly on killing?

The 'government' doesn't tend to commit school shootings though

Yes. Pretty much the definition of government is that it’s the entity which has a monopoly on legitimate force and violence on behalf of the people.

It's statements like those that make me wonder how close Brits like me are, culturally, to our American cousins. I can't work out how much is genuine fear of the government and how much that argument is used falsely as they simply don't want to lose their guns.

200 kids were in my year at high school; id trust about a dozen of them with a firearm. At least the government is somehow accountable and is less likely to take a drug cocktail and shoot up the neighbourhood

That's kinda the definition of a government. Having a monopoly doesn't mean they necessarily use violance morally or immorally (or at all), but it's historically better than ad-lib violance.

Clearly America is the home of the child slaying lunatic, endorsed and supported by the everyday joe in the street who wants to keep hold of his penis, sorry...gun. I definately meant gun.

Read Thomas Hobbes's Leviathan or Pinker's Better Angels of our Nature. Government monopoly on violence was essential to creating our peaceful societies in human history. Deterrence from violent acts because of fear of government retaliation is a good thing in the long run.
