I understand why you would say that, but I'm not talking nostalgia in an uncritical sense. I only mean that we need to look at what we've already lost (both good and bad) if we want to make sense of where we're going

Not quite. I mean a kind of historical dramatic irony, where the full implications of technology are known by us, but not by the characters of the novel. A good example is Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge
