This appears to be the trend, and while that's how I am primarily learning (having reached an intermediate level) I'm not sure how I would have gotten to that stage without some basic study of grammar and lexis

Also guided output is definitely necessary too if one wants to actually communicate rather than simply understand the language (if that's how we're defining acquisition)

it's more that the quality of output is largely a product of how much comprehensible input you've gotten. it's very easy to become good at speaking relatively quickly once you've reached a good level of comprehension.

it's okay to study grammar, but most time should be spent on comprehensible input. grammar nd output r a supplement to the learning process. as an analogy, not as evidence, think of how a baby learns. yes, he make sounds, but he spends far more time listening thn mouthing sounds
