Anyone who has taken an undergraduate degree in the humanities has taken a degree in bluffing. The idea that one could become an expert in Victorian literature, existentialism or the Byzantine Empire in a few weeks is nonsense. What you DO learn is how to lie and get away with it

Not of their subject specifically, but the ability to talk about something at length with only a superficial knowledge. Yes, I had politicians in mind, as well as journalists and fiction writers. Hardly the cream of society
