i can 100% say that if the localization industry was democratically controlled subtitles would be so, so much better

Subtitles are incredibly subjective to a degree that people don’t realize. There are dozens of companies who have spent years shopping “automated” subtitling software to companies and those companies always wind up bringing those subtitles to a real company to repair
-
Automated subtitles, even when they are sort of accurate (which is extremely rare), are some of the most ugly unreadable subs I’ve ever encountered and it’s basically a scam
-
So I’m not too worried about that right now haha
-
I've frequently seen it on lists of soon-to-be-automated jobs, but thought to myself that computers are still really bad at communicating the nuance of human speech, especially in works of art, and probably always will be
-
hofstadter spent a whole book on just one poem (le ton beau de marot) so its safe to say quality automated subtitling is still very far away
