For example, explicitly referencing their addictive nature in a way that the user is congratulated for his "self-awareness" though he continues. Although, thinking it over, this self-debasement is being carried out by users and no longer requires a top-down approach

Even Nickelodeon did it. I remember an "EmptyV" parody of MTV on one of their teen variety shows (both channels on Viacom too)
