But you are fine with 50.1% gets 100 per cent of the power?

50% + 1 is called “majority rule,” and it is the foundational principle of modern democracy, so YES!, it is far superior to winner-take-all, minority rule, elected dictatorship, first-past-the-post by FAR!

50.1 percent is also winner take all. Perhaps you should tone down the rhetoric.

50% + 1 is called “majority rule,” and while it is certainly not a perfect system, it is the best we have yet come up with, and far superior to winner-take-all first-past-the-post. These are the facts - perhaps you should consider them.

Winner takes all if they get 50.1 percent so 49.9 percent are “ignored” and get “nothing”. Sounds pretty awful.

You‘d rather 39% takes all, like Canadians have now? Majority rule is how modern democracy works. I happen to believe in it (maybe you don’t?), and I’m looking forward to the day when Canadians actually have a democratic electoral system - based on majority rule.

point is both systems leave sizeable potion of population with no “power”. I dislike rhetoric about x% = 100%of power. It a poor attitude. government should rule on behalf of all. My MP reps me whether I vote for them or not. they are responsible to riding not some party list

You may find my rhetoric overly strong, but the fact remains that false-majority governments hold all the legislative power. Hence, 39% of the vote really does win 100% of the power. The idea that your MP answers to you and not their party is a nice theory.

We should never say your vote 🗳 doesn’t matter. Voting always makes a difference no matter the democracy we live in. Not commenting of FPTP vs PR just the last bullet point on the graphic :)

In a proportional representation system every vote counts because seats are distributed according to popular vote, but in Canada’s simple plurality system (FPTP) half the votes are “wasted” because they elect no one - which is why 2 out of 5 Canadians don’t even bother to vote.

I’m aware... thank you very much (I know how democracy and FPTP works) but when people hear things like their vote is wasted, it hurts civic action and democracy no matter what system it’s in.

In an unfair system many votes are wasted and abstention can actually be the responsible choice, hard as that is for idealistic people to accept. As for B.C., there was a LOT of money poured into stopping proportional representation. Turns out the greedy still hate democracy.

We get what we deserve, I guess. So sad the voters in BC were too lazy to think this out and see through the FPTP propaganda. Also disgusted that Horgan did such a bland and unspecific job of explaining and defending ProRep.

Nah, PR is bullshit. The government and its manifesto are chosen by politicians negotiating for influence behind closed doors, not by voters.

The agenda today is set in the back rooms of the dominant parties, which rule with false majorities, which means the minority ruling over the majority. Half the votes today elect no one, and basically go in the garbage, which is why 2 out of 5 Canadians don’t even bother to vote.

In a party system like our prov govts, a FPTP system isnt the problem. Proportional rep wouldn’t yield better results when really there’s only 3-4 parties to pick from. The issue is how seats are determined which doesn’t reflect the fact that majority of people live in cities

Representative democracy (presumably something we all want) is based on the principle of all votes being equal. A good system must start with this principle as its foundation, not with a preconception of how we would like power distributed amongst established political parties.

Indeed. In party politics and where we aren’t afforded much choice, I would much prefer a system whereby a party only gets as many seats as they garnered in overall votes eg 42% of the votes = 42% of the seats.
