A what? A Grey Plover? What's that? I spent three years finding out, and it led me on an odyssey across the globe and into myself. Launch of my book 'Flight Lines' is this week in Hobart, next week in Melbourne. And here's the fleeting beauty. (Pic: Heather Alexander)

Great news from Myanmar for . Politicians are now supporting threatened species and habitats on East Asian-Australasian Flyway - truly inspiring. Some of the key scientific evidence that led to change:

One of the heroes of waterbird conservation through his tireless stimulation of waders research especially but not just in UK and Australia

Sorry to hear this and my thoughts are with his family and friends. I never met him but am sure he has left a valuable scientific legacy, esp this co-authored paper on curlew migration and mortality which remains very relevant

We respectfully offer one e.g. of the enduring Clive Minton legacy. On Saturday survey, Convenor Eric Woehler found four flagged Ruddy Turnstones together on King Island. Effort on K.I. by under Clive's guidance will yield data on migration/fidelity for years to come.

Nice photo of Clive Minton, who died this week. Clive was founder of (1959*) (1970) (1979) AWSG (1981). He will be remembered with fondness by the worldwide community of enthusiasts. A true leader. *WWRG blog:

Perhaps less well known to the global shorebird researcher community, the Cryptic Forest-Falcon (Micrastur mintoni) was named honouring Clive by Andrew Whittaker, one of his many protégés who combined would go on to play huge roles in shaping ornithology.

Very sad news. He was a big hero for me when I first studied shorebirds under the wing of Prof Peter Evans who was another doyen of waterbird research and conservation. Big shoes to fill.
