On the other hand the palace at Versailles was built without any toilets and the various nobility had to relieve themselves under staircases and in closets

They also did so in the hallways/against the outer walls/p much anywhere and everywhere. Women even had little gravy boat items they could hold up under their skirt to go literally anywhere.

Nope! they also thought in 17th century Versailles that bathing opened the pores to “miasma” in the air which is what made you sick so they didn’t bathe, simply changed clothing several times a day & wiped off with a linen cloth. I cant imagine how bad it smelled there!
