I looked up the rules just now, and looking back, they were particularly sexually charged. I didn't really know what half the things were, and what could exist in this realm, but it's definitely a subculture that always left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

The forums were too often vitriolic towards women. Every time a user claimed to be a woman, the floodgates of online abuse came in, even over a decade ago. Remember, 4chan is also where anonymous is from. And that's not to say anonymous is always bad, but no one knew anyone.

(Also, a side note: that is not to say Anonymous as a whole is bad. Every 4chan subthread was another world, to point fingers at Anonymous for this is unwise)

Also, before I continue, porn of EVERY kind was readily available on 4chan. As were whole threads and subthreads on violent fantasies. Anything and everything that maybe I shouldn't have been exposed to was available to me. I just chose not to.

I'm reading this book, or trying to, about nerd culture. It discusses the oppression faced by marginalized identities that has been co-opted by white nerd males. It talks about things like Revenge of the Nerds, and geekchic.

From personal experience, many nerds live this life where they're proud to love what they love, but also have a desire to be accepted (honestly, who doesn't?) and a resentment towards anyone who doesn't do so. But what we liked wasn't cool, so of course we weren't cool???

except now geeky interests are chic, and have been for some years now, so if geek is chic, shouldn't... the socially awkward nerds then also... be cool???? Too bad reality is not linear that way.

These geeks-gone-rogue, who grew up in an echo chamber that likely validated and fuelled resentment towards, to use their terms, normies, Chads, and Stacys, may have expected reality to be more linear. Everything they consumed (tv, movies, games, forums...) told them it would be.

So the world must be wrong, and it's a weird righteous need to finally get their comeuppance, i think? to finally be the underdog that "wins", even if it's the bad end version. In a twisted sort of way, I get it. I don't want to, and wish I didn't. I think that's why I'm scared

As an aside, Toronto's van driver & the Isla Vista killer would have been 1 grade below me. They likely would have been in my nerd club if we'd gone to the same school. There would have been a high likelihood we would have been friends. That terrifies me

Like, to tie it back to nerd things, if the internet was Bruce Banner, the manosphere is Devil Hulk. And if the driver was, indeed, an incel? well, Devil Hulk got out. And unless we take this threat seriously, it'll keep getting out.

But what can we do about this?? Let young men enjoy things without ridicule. Teach them not to feel ashamed of not being "manly"/"macho"/"cool". Validate their emotions. Teach them to respect women, or at least to see them as more than sexual objects. Teach coping skills.

These aren't new ideas! And this isn't even, like, an ideological feminist soapbox thing. There's research out there! Psychological/sociological research that validates the idea that unlearning systemic toxic masculinity is necessary for a healthy society!

anyway, soapbox of the night is again about mental health. This weird socialization of gender norms isn't the default, and it's honestly messing with a lot of people's mental health. And seeking help for stuff isn't shameful either!

Inside Out wasn't kidding. Pixar got it right. It's okay to feel and express things. Emotional intelligence is hard af, but so so important. anyway. these are just my thoughts. not necessarily about what happened yesterday, but in geek culture and society as a whole? IDK, i'm just a tiny twitter individual with a cat who's hungry. so i'll shut up now
