What are your favorite books (or other resources) about eucalypts? Particularly, but not only, if you’re an expert in a relevant field.

My monolith take is: anyone with a good chunk of stainless steel, a shovel, and access can place a monolith, and this is only one of the reasons why the “who” question feels pretty uninteresting to me.

It's weird to me that political leaders keep saying that 'gradually' lifting lockdown orders will somehow contain the virus. Every time countries ease restrictions their caseloads go up.

Each winter, fresh snow supports a great conversation about how much we’ve over-designed our streets & roads, & how much space we could reclaim for people & public life. We call them , or “snowy neckdowns.” GIF via

Here’s the kind of thing I’m talking about. It should go without saying that satellite OSINT can’t replace “normal” war journalism, but the gap in basic what-was-bombed-and-how-much knowledge is obvious. Who’s on this?

Hey OSINT nerds, there are a handful of very basic claims in contention about the current TPLF/government war in Ethiopia. Stuff like where large numbers of troops are. Applying some 🛰️ expertise to these questions could do a lot to help understand the situation.

“This Is Just To Say” William Carlos Williams (1883–1963) I have misued the dollars that were in the tips and which you were probably saving for rent Forgive me they were valuable so precious and so beneficial to shareholder returns in a system that rarely punishes wage theft

There are legitimate science goals for crewed Moon and especially Mars missions. Current plans serve some of them. And funding strctures mean it’s not zero-sum. But imagine what a thoroughly science-led space program would look like.

There’s some overstatement out here of just how bad it is for radio astronomy to lose the Arecibo observatory. It’s bad enough without exaggerating. But I hope this helps more voters and planetary science enthusiasts learn to spot sciencewashing.

As the drumbeat for politically convenient Moon and Mars missions continues over the next decade or two, remember that we let a storm destroy one of the largest scientific instruments in the world because it was in Puerto Rico.
