This bartender says living off of tips makes life miserable. "When I serve patrons from countries who don’t know about American tipping culture, I don’t get paid."https://bit.ly/2pjIt9h

My son rotates locations for a high end street food joint. Reports generous tips in mixed & modest income settings. Terrible tips & rudeness in tech central. I’m curious. Do others share this take?

As a guy that served food for a living, yes the Higher the income level, the lower % the tip would be. Middle class folks get it that I worked for tips, so they gave the extra above the standard 15%.

Pretty much answered in the article. They don't pay a living wage.

Tipping culture is horrible. We should pay a fair wage to begin with. Tips should be optional, not expected.

What I dont get about the US is that food/drinks are just as expensive (pre tip) or even more so than in countries where waitstaff make an ok wage. So where does the money go if it’s not to wages??

I was a bartender and I lived on tips. I had cash every day , made good money, and had a lot of fun doing it. I guess everybody is different.

Tipping was introduced on fake premises now long defunct. It's socially acceptable petty corruption (special treatment for cash). It legitimises wage theft and exploitation. It makes female staff dependent on harrassers to make rent. And it leads to worse service. Kill it with 🔥

It really is, you get cheapened on your hourly rate and there's no real way to control the amount of tips you receive, the whole concept makes no sense

I loved making $25 an hour in combined tip and hourly wage income. You think your employer is going to pay you that otherwise. Not a chance. You'll get $12.50 an hour and no tips if tips are done away unless you unionize.

And yet, there are plenty of other people who work primarily for tips who love it. Why not interview them also, and get a balanced opinion?
