all this says is that restaurants are mad that they have to pay wages now rather than shifting all the responsibility to the customers. about time.

Look at what happened to similar initiatives in other cities. I live near San Francisco. Total disaster was predicted but didn't happen. Customers were OK with it, and workers were less desperately poor. It also included a health insurance requirement. :-)

Pay the workers, dammit. It's obscene that the person who serves your nice meal is hungry. Wages are so low that I've seen restaurant workers sneak bites of leftovers off of diners' plates... usually a firing offense.pic.twitter.com/YdU9fhKFSr

Restaurants are mad that they will have to stop externalizing their labor costs. That's why they've shelled out so much for their astroturf campaign.

Seems worth mentioning that people of color are consistently tipped less than white employees. The current system institutionalizes a permanent wage gap between white waiters and waiters of color. The minimum wage increase would help mitigate that differential.

No, they’re worried it will cut into their profits. It’s not some altruistic concern about the overall economic well-being of the area.

And they think it’s OK to pay their workers next to nothing for wages? And they’re all in DC? I’m a business owner. I pay my employees very good wages. And my wages are only slightly higher because I’m not greedy. And my customers aren’t expected to tip my staff either.

Hello- DC tipped worker here. A whole lot of us make well above minimum wage from tips. If tips end, our income plummets. I support a solution to make sure all tipped workers make a living wage. This is solution is an over broad one that hurts folks while helping others.
