    We took stock, with EU leaders, of relations with Turkey and Russia. We are engaging and will continue supporting Turkey, as host country of millions of refugees. But 🇪🇺🇷🇺 relations are on a negative spiral. We will deal with Russia from a position of strength.

    Hungary has 10 million citizens. That's 10 million reasons for Hungary to be & remain in the EU. Our EU is based on democratic values which include, in particular, the protection of minorities against discrimination. We must work every day to ensure that our democracies live.

    Last week, I expressed my concerns about the new Hungarian law. Yesterday, most of us were clear that it goes against our values. We, at the Commission, assessed this law thoroughly. We wrote to the Hungarian government, detailing our legal concerns. We will defend our values!

    We had an intense & very frank discussion about values. This discussion was needed. And it was very emotional. Because it is about people’s lives, their dignity & their feelings. And it is also about what we believe in, as a Union. We must live by these values!
