  3. So important, in both teaching and in practising with the voice. A new skill is not learned and consolidated all at once; that would be like climbing a mountain in one leap. Smaller steps make things accessible, even though you may not feel like you are getting there. You will.

  4. What do singing teachers need? A desire to bring out the best in your students and to find ways of doing this.

  5. What about backing tracks? Isn't it cheating if you're a singing teacher? No. Choose carefully & learn to get the right tempo and key. Teach your students to use them. Better for some genres. Frees you to look and teach.

  6. Struggling with a high note? It could be a word problem! Try the note on a vowel only and see if it makes a difference. Consonants are often the culprits and need stylistic approaches. You may also have better vowels than others.

    I love working with new singing teachers on the the in-person workshop day of my mentoring programme. After three months of online work it is always great to meet and work with them in person.

    In accent or dialect work it can be very subtle movements of the tongue, lips, palate or internal space that make a difference. Find out what YOU do habitually first. Then find broad differences between that and the target accent and work towards the finer ones.

    When practising avoid just singing your song or speaking your monologue over and over again. Do it once and find the difficult areas, then work on those methodically. It will get you further in the long run.

    Yes. Build a deep foundation and then you won't be all show and no substance! The rewards are often hidden until you're ready.
