    This is a gastrolith, a rock swallowed by an animal to aid in digestion. Animals still use rocks for digestion, but this one is much older. This gastrolith is from a sauropod dinosaur. Grind up another mystery tomorrow!

    Flashback to Artemis when she first arrived at the VLM! She has grown up so much! In the most recent photo, she can be seen scale training: learning to stand on a new object so keeper's can weigh her without stress.

    This is a textile cone snail shell. They are found in the Indo-Pacific in shallow waters. These carnivores feed on other molluscs. They have very toxic venom, so it's best to leave them alone. Another mystery tomorrow!

    Other animals, like our Fowler's toads, will respond to seeing themselves in a mirror. This type of enrichment is closely monitored to watch for fear or aggression, but healthy natural behaviors like mate calling or territorial gestures are encouraged.

    The herpetology dept uses enrichment for the reptiles and amphibians to encourage natural behaviors. Many of our reptiles, like our blue tongue skink, dig and burrow. The use of this PVC pipe provides a tunnel to hide in and various substrates can give a chance to dig.

    Did you hear about the fish who grew up to be a doctor? He is now a sturgeon. The shortnose sturgeon is an endangered fish that lives in rivers and coastal waters from Canada to Florida.
