My issue isn't with the story, which is newsworthy. It's with the NYT calling it "Breaking News." But I'm not one of those guys saying it doesn't matter, Trump or no Trump, so there's that. It all matters.

... A terrorist attack. A devastating earthquake in LA. Today, esp. on CNN and because of clickbait SM, anything that comes across the news desk is called Breaking News. Because this story is abt. an 8-year-old event, it is newsworthy, but it's not "Breaking News" in my book.

I gave some examples. There are others. Like ones you cited. But there are many more. Final 2016 election results would be breaking news, terrorist attacks would be, Comey firing, Brexit vote, Hawaii missile alert, Hawaii missile alert error, etc etc.
