  1. When something gets below zero marginal utility -- eg trash or a song you heard too many times -- it still ocuppies valuable (scarce) space and time. It doesn't become post scarcity or a "non economic good" (whatever that is). We pay for trash removal.

So what went wrong? Just as with the Low Countries, it's still not fully clear. But if we're to understand why Britain's efflorescence didn't fizzle out, we need to also understand why the Saadi Empire's forgotten golden age did. More detail here:

  5. Not sure "fizzled out" is the right word here. Didn't it face a trade blockade from Britain?

Yet despite that innovation-led alternative escape route from Malthus, which has allowed the whole world to benefit, England in the meantime unfortunately pursued Hakluyt's nationalistic and ultimately misguided plan, at great cost to millions. More here:

You might have heard of the Malthusian Trap: the idea that despite some economic growth, the population grows faster, so that eventually you're left with a larger population that is no richer than before. But while Thomas Malthus is famous for the idea, he was not its inventor.

Google Dataset Search is now officially out of beta. "Dataset Search has indexed almost 25 million of these datasets, giving you a single place to search for datasets & find links to where the data is." Nice work, Natasha Noy and everyone else involved!

I had fun introducing to our 1st yr PhD students using data from Minard's famous graphic of Napolean's troops as they marched on Moscow during 1812. So many variables plotted at once, yet so intuitive and elegant. One of greatest graphics ever, indeed.

Here's my new paper arguing that economists who study institutions can learn much from the qualitative research methods of political science:

  20. Can US still work with 1b people? When US started it had 2.5 million people. Constitution survived a x130 increase in population + a civil war -- it's a resilient institutional framework. It will survive another x3 increase in population.
