This is why I really like the PVLDB hybrid model of doing research :) Seems like a viable compromise. Only thing I would add is that authors are not required to present their research; publishing is decoupled from presenting

In this respect IMWUT/Ubicomp model also works. Four deadlines in a year, eventual publication of the work in a Journal, and authors can also present the work like conference.

Like this model too!

@vj_chidambaram Among other cons I believe as an early career researcher; journals do not provide opportunity to interact and connect with other peers and seniors. Sometimes on spot criticism helps a lot. Otherwise journals are always good to go! -
I think meeting with folks and discussing is great too! I'm saying we can do that in a decoupled way from publishing papers.

The "slow turn-around" these days does not seem to be all that much slower than any of the top-tier SE conferences though. There is also the opportunity to revise and resubmit, which reduces some of the reviewer randomness.
-
it does reduce randomness. but when you're stuck with a bad set of reviewers, randomness can be good.

I think there’s higher accountability for reviewers too. Can’t arbitrarily reject a paper on flimsy grounds!

what do you mean?

I don’t think journals need to be slow. Turn around time for my VLDB journal submission was 3 months and review was excellent. Why do you say that the review quality is lower? If anything, with two or three rounds, you get a dialog going and get much better review!
