What really makes me mad is that we CHARGE students for applying. We then have an obligation to process each packet and find good students. Saying "things happen" and "there are so many applications" just implies we don't have good search/filter processes, which we should fix.

But I believe the main reason why some students mail is so that they can save money by getting some answer from the professor before submitting their application. Every student applies to 7-8 (8*200$) schools, so they'd rather apply to schools where the Prof. has responded.

Yes, thats true for some students. Some students also email after applying, to make sure the prof sees their application.

We don't make them email, though! Last year, I think the set of applicants I contacted had no overlap with the set of prospective applicants that emailed me.

But I do want students who are genuinely wondering if it makes sense for them to apply to reach out. I always encourage them to apply, and if they seem like a good fit for me, I'll be especially encouraging.

Who the heck is *requiring* it? Where do you even get that?

I didn't email any profs when I applied, I waited until they saw my application and contacted me. Didn't know at the time I was supposed to contact them first, probably wouldn't have had the confidence to do it anyway.
