I'm deeply grateful to be confirmed by the Senate to serve once again as your Surgeon General. We've endured great hardship as a nation over the past year, and I look forward to working with you to help our nation heal and create a better future for our children.

Paul was a gift to humanity. Such a big heart and generous spirit. I will miss his warmth and friendship. He inspired generations to ask how we could best serve the twin causes of health and justice. And he led by example. I’m heartbroken by his passing. I will never forget him.

A moving reflection from Michael Powell about his late father: “The example of Colin Powell does not call on us to emulate his résumé. It is to emulate his character and his example as a human being. We can strike to do that. We can choose to be good.”

  15. After a day of difficult memories of 9/11, I’m blessed to find solace in the gentle sounds of our children breathing as they sleep. I hope to never take these precious moments for granted. Tomorrow the sun rises and marks a new beginning. May it bring peace to all.

  18. A teacher once told me childhood treats are more than food. They are the love your mother gave you as a child. He must’ve been thinking about my mother’s homemade fruit cake which she just surprised me with. One of the many gifts and memories she has given me over the years.
