Here’s how Siri’s support for third-party messaging apps works on iOS 13.2:
- It recognizes if you frequently text a contact via WhatsApp
- Instead of iMessage, uses WhatsApp by default (based on existing SiriKit framework)
- Lets you pick different apps inside Siri

Note how the system is currently a bit buggy (not sure why two smart home apps are showing up in there) and how this doesn’t seem to require any new developer API – WhatsApp already supported SiriKit before, and now Siri brings it up by default – no special command required.

I really, really hope this is the start of the approach and they do this with everything. I want Spark, Fantastical, and Spotify without appending every time.

Need this for choosing a default media app whenever you initiate “play”. Give me a default Podcasting app.

I’ve always been fascinated by how Apple has never pushed “iMessage” as an app name. I feel like that’s a big part of its success, it’s not a different app you have to deal with, it’s just ‘Messages,’ but better.

How about shearing sheet. Now Siri suggest only iMessages or mail and airdrop. When we can see other apps there like WhatsApp?

How would this system work with different languages? For example, I have my iPhone set to English, but my contact communicates in a different language.
