Norfolk is more separated by race now than it was in the Jim Crow era. For the past year, a team of The Virginian-Pilot's reporters have studied the disparities that continue to divide and disadvantage people of color living in one of the state's largest cities.

Today begins The Pilot's "Dividing Lines" project, where we lay out the reality of and dive further into Norfolk's tumultuous history with housing discrimination.https://www.pilotonline.com/projects/dividing-lines/vp-nw-dividing-lines-intro-20210121-ileui6jjo5d3vnbrebkrwmdf2i-htmlstory.html …

For full disclosure, the people behind this reporting are white and benefit from numerous privileges that the disadvantaged populations highlighted in this project do not, "So we have blind spots." To residents who know their neighbors, it may not be difficult to visualize Norfolk's segregation — by and large, there are Black neighborhoods and there are white. We've put together eight maps to demonstrate how deep the divide is throughout the city.https://www.pilotonline.com/projects/dividing-lines/vp-nw-dividing-lines-segregation-20210121-nl2ygr47mrg7vdifoh2cxnxcbq-htmlstory.html …

We want to see Norfolkians' thoughts on the city's divisions and their experiences due to the local history — and current state — of segregation. Find out how you can give feedback and contribute to our Feb. 18 "Dividing Lines" virtual town hall here:https://www.pilotonline.com/projects/dividing-lines/vp-nw-dividing-lines-reader-help-20210122-q4yuheud5jezrahxvv6ws4rbbi-story.html …

Hi, I'm one of the reporters, along with @JournoMurph. The two of us are beat reporters who cover the schools and city, respectively, so we've seen day-to-day how these issues of race and segregation affect policymaking today. We can't ignore that and still do our jobs well. 1/?

hmm, blind spots and bias. would it help to let disadvantage people who contributed to your reporting via testimonials also have input on editing the report itself? not sure what the best practice is in journalism.

Absolutely - we'll be publishing a story tomorrow specifically asking people from the community to reach out to us with their stories, thoughts, experiences, etc. No reason to wait, here's a link to the Google Form where we're collecting responses.https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfmxxQaCh5oI1gQ8mvybWyVTlki4eMt7vVM-z2heXkLljw0oQ/viewform …

This is a lot of navel gazing where hiring Black people is actually the answer. For full disclosure, this is performative. For full disclosure, this is exploitative.

Believe me, @JournoMurph and I know this needs to happen and wish our newsroom was more diverse. There are blind spots we can never overcome no matter how hard we try to educate ourselves, and we know that.
