Our pulm physiology attending shared this fact yesterday: the race began when malamutes/Alaskan huskies delivered diphtheria antitoxin to Nome l! Allow me to share some facts about pulm physiology and the heroic humans/animals who saved Nome from Diptheria in 1925!! 1/https://twitter.com/fourhchic/status/969978387136618497 …

Although none of the current race paths are especially accurate to follow the original relay race route getting diphtheria vaccine to Nome. (Aside: early open cockpit planes, couldn’t fly below zero) But shhh🤫 we don’t want the anti-vaxers protesting the race with PETA

VO2max: it’s the MAXIMUM OXYGEN CONSUMPTION AT PEAK EXERCISE. We use CPET (cardio-pulmonary exercise testing) to get these values as part of figuring out the cause of dyspnea in humans, amongst other indications. To provide perspective, here are some VO2max values: 2/

How does the animal kingdom perform? A thoroughbred horse can reach VO2max of 180 ml/kg/min. By the way, this can equal 600 Liters of oxygen per minute! In the picture: Cloud Computing, 2017 Preakness Winner. Picture credit: CBS Baltimorepic.twitter.com/mXBDrbDfvU

Dr. Welch and his team in Nome had an expired batch of diptheria antitoxin. This was pre vaccination era and diptheria was known as the “strangling angel of the children”! A thick pseudo membrane forming in the kids’ throat would kill by suffocation. Pic:isolation card (Sanofi)pic.twitter.com/55S4QhpTpC

Washington DC responded to repeat telegrams for help, located antitoxin in Anchorage, but with no way of sea transport st Seward, the antitoxin was delivered to Nome along the 674-mile Nenana-to-Nome Trail, a trip that usually took 15 to 20 days!!! Balto was honored with a statue in Central Park, NYC. He has stood on that rock outcropping beaming his endurance, bravery and loyalty since 1925!! Fun fact: the #realBalto was an honored guest at the unveiling by the sculptor Frederick George Richard Roth! Pic: NYC ❤️ NYCpic.twitter.com/F8zwc1Ybkx
