Prikvačeni tweet
I'll be starting an extended retreat today, in which I continue to be immersed in the realities of day-to-day life and the hardships and heart breaks of being human. Feel free to join in.

Goddamnit, can't you see that reality isn't fucking flat!?

That this cultural evolutions rests stop the biosphere is one of the most important things I can think of to keep in mind. If we debase ourselves, there's no reason to think that this human experiment in evolution won't come to an abrupt halt (or stall out significantly).

Also, human cultural evolution is happening at a much faster time rate than either physical or biological evolution, on the scale of hundreds or thousands of years, instead of millions or billions.

The challenge is in fluidly zoom between timescales when thinking about this, realizing that in the short-to-medium term there is progress and regression, lines and circles, but in the long-term there is "revolution with change" (John Vervaeke), or spiralling evolution.pic.twitter.com/qxEee9u8GN

I don't think it's much of a leap to suggest that the same physical and biological evolution that we've witnessed with our scientific methods of observation/analysis, are also happening with human culture, spirituality, economics, etc.

Here's an evolutionary vision that I'd propose is more true than either of these models: New physical & biological forms have emerged over time (atoms, cells, complex multi-cellular organisms) and have become a relatively stable foundation upon which further emergence occurs.

The truth I find in the linear model is that history isn't just a constant Groundhog Day scenario, but there is real change happening, and that some of this change can be seen as relative progress, at least across multiple fronts.

Another truth I find in this circular vision of history is that we have lost important truths from the past, that need recovering. This is why I've been learning to garden from my Elders, and why I've studied several religious traditions in-depth.

This post-modern flatland loop comes on the heels of the deconstruction & dismantling of grand narratives, especially the modern narrative of endless progress & growth. Important truth: Endless progress/growth is what got us into this ecological crisis!

A lot of post-modern thought is stuck in a flatland vision of history as endlessly cycling, going nowhere in particular. The Buddhists tried that too, although they had 6 realms to cycle through, and a clear goal (escaping the loop).

This is my main problem with wokeism, an ideology whose adherents can't seem to make distinctions between differents levels of ethical failure, and who don't seem to think that people can learn from their failures. They also they think they're above it all, which is utter BS.

Can you get more specific about what it means to "give you pause?" Are you saying that someone making a mistake invalidates everything else they say? I hope for your sake, you don't actually believe that, because one day it'll be you who has fucked up. We all do.https://twitter.com/markdavislcsw/status/1223721885503909888 …

...Many of us get scared we'll give away too much authority (and often we do!) but relationship still remains one of the most powerful ways to go beyond ourselves. If you're too scared to trust someone else, than maybe you shouldn't trust yourself.” - Genpo Roshi (I think)

"Why is a teacher important? Because you need to, at some point, allow your ego to be submitted to another person's gaze. Anarchists hate this--they want to be in control of the lack of control...

I ran across this ad on Facebook, in which The Economist is trying to profit off of Coronavirus anxiety. This is perfect example of what Naomi Klein and others call “disaster capitalism.”pic.twitter.com/S9PIt8EoWR

Looks like Republicans are about to acquit the chief-pussy-grabber. Should we be surprised? No. Should we be extremely worried for the future of our Democracy? Yes, yes we should.
