my family are Vietnamese Catholics, and the conservative rhetoric claiming to be on the side of Christianity definitely sways a good number of them. It’s really sad to watch

Exactly what I was thinking - I’ve spent almost half my life in East Asia, and there’s nothing monolithic about any of the cultures I’ve lived in. Obviously the diaspora is different again, but still

I think this has to be looked at group-by-group, similar to the "Hispanic vote". For Chinese & Japanese, it appear to be class-related; for Chinese & Viet, also communism-trauma related. And for Viets in particular, I'd also wager right-leaning Viet-language misinformation.

Agreed + there’s a whooooole lot of WeChat misinformation that millennials and zoomera are battling against, without the specific language proficiency to properly dispel misinformation and conservativism. And the filial piety that guilts younger gens from swaying elders

Different but interesting resonances: emphases on religiousness, grit and resourcefulness, "traditional" gender roles, experiences of communism in home country, educational achievements...
