Writers from a minority, write as if you are the majority. Do not explain. Do not cater. Do not translate. Do not apologize. Assume everyone knows what you are talking about, as the majority does. Write with all the privileges of the majority, but with the humility of a minority.

Reminder: in choosing AD, Oprah wasn’t just sprinkling magic bestseller dust in a random title. Oprah is in business with Flatiron. In 2015, Oprah sold a memoir to Flatiron for a reported eight figures — and agreed to run an imprint there.

I do genuinely think it’s an under-discussed story - one that’s quite beautiful - that the only two US Muslim Congresswomen are both vocal and enthusiastic supporters of the candidate who would make history by becoming the first Jewish President in US history.

  6. Joaquin Phoenix calls out systemic racism in the film industry and awards practices in his acceptance speech. I hope his industry listens to his conclusion: that white people have to dismantle the racist practices that they’ve built and profited from.

Dude doesn't seem to understand that its, me, the critic who received the death threats. I've been told I'll be shot. I've been told I ought to be dismembered. If I'm murdered for my criticism, be sure to leave my body in front of Flatiron's offices.

As the AMERICAN DIRT narrative shifts from “problematic book exposes deep-seated flaws in Big Publishing” to “unhinged, violent mob tries to silence author,” think about who is pushing the second take — and whose reputation benefits from it

Stunned speechless by THE SYMPATHIZER. I cannot believe this assured, confident, stylistic, captivating piece of writing is Viet Thanh Nguyen’s first novel. I love when authors show me something I would never notice…

  16. Seriously, I miss my family, which is why I’m coming back to the USA, but otherwise I’d be happy to give Sweden a chance, what with its affordable or free medical care, day care, education, long family leave, and no guns. Plus almost everybody speaks English!

Except for the few dozen times I’ve been told I should’ve been raped and left for dead on the PCT because I had the audacity to write about hiking on it. And that’s just me. So many women writers have similar stories.
