And that's with using a terrible storage driver, which I wrote as a temporary measure. I'm switching us to an even faster backend in the following months so we'll finally have a good key-value storage story across Mozilla.

    That's a million people's workflows I have a responsibility for not breaking.

My formatting add-on just passed 1 million (!) installs on PackageControl. It's both humbling and satisfying:

Oh man, this certainly brings back memories. I still wish I could've taken this concept much further 8 years ago, visualising z-index, or compositor layers, or semantic markup, or...

I can't help but think there's something here about having a clearly defined hierarchy of data ownership and propagation, that results in both soundness and maintainability, regardless of the domain.

Unidirectional data flow resolves this by preventing the sea of UI components, much like how Rust’s ownership tree prevents the sea of objects (at the type system level). In both cases, there’s implications to ergonomics for the simple case, and robustness in the complex case.

Imperative frontend APIs lead to a sea of UI components. Seemingly uncoupled but indirectly correlated parts of UI require cognitive overhead in avoiding a whole class of synchronisation issues by having to think about "how things should be" instead of "how things should change".

If "how it looks" means "how readable it is", then I actually wish that were in fact true. You're probably not writing code just for yourself. And that code isn't usually hot. So, unless you're sacrificing correctness (reliability?), then yes, please, try to make it readable.

Sun setting at exactly 3:52 PM. If we’re to keep changing our clocks twice a year, how about we optimize for well being instead?

Actually, this has happened to me. Twice. Both times I was abroad. First time it was in high school, so my excuse was that I was young and stupid. Second time my wife had to take a 12h bus to rescue me, so my excuse was that I was older and stupid.

The stark contrasts in technology spread even in developed countries: 🇸🇪 Sweden in small towns, earlier this year: "Sorry, we don't deal with cash around here... Can you pay by card?" 🇩🇪 Germany, large cities: "Sorry, we don't accept cards, you need to find an ATM."

“Is it a good chatterbot” isn’t the right question to ask when the implications involve the slavery of an entirely new species, or potentially destructive changes to human civilization.

“Being able to tell” isn’t good enough. Tell what? About what? By who? On the other hand, we can be sure enough assuming we accept some set of underlying philosophical principles, but then we’d have to get all countries to agree. Which is going to be hard, when money is involved.

Turing test is optimized for disproving consciousness when it easy to do so. If AI improves dramatically, we’ll need something more nuanced, precise and ethical, for situations where we’d *really like to make sure* and it’s *not easy to do so*.

Hey, the internet is 50 years old today! The first data was transmitted over Arpanet (its prototype) on Oct. 29, 1969. And no kidding: that first transmission was "LOL," after a botched attempt to transmit "LOGIN" had to be started over. Joke's on us I guess.

Or: we could engulf all populated areas in domes providing artificial light, syncing up daytime and nighttime across the entire planet. Timezones will be a thing of the past and people would look back at us as primitive. “Letting nature dictate their sleep habits and society”.
