Former poor kids: what are some things you have in your house that you *never* had as a kid, things your not-poor friends would never consider luxuries?

A few of mine are Kleenex, band-aids, ziplock bags, and paper towels.

Vegetables! For the first few years on my own, I was like, “What the fuck do I do with these?”

Washer & dryer. (We did get them when I was in high school.) Refrigerator with an ice maker. It feels insanely opulent.

Some days I remember the weekly laundromat trips fondly, then I wonder if my old age is getting to me. Once in high school the attendant stole some of my clothes, and we saw her wearing them the next week.

My kid brought me a flashlight he found in the bathroom and asked what it was doing in there. I said, “It’s in case the power goes out.” He just stared at me like, WTF? And I realized the power was out a lot when I was a kid because we didn’t pay the bill.

Dishwasher, books, dogs living in the house and not exclusively outside (unfixed), snacks, fridge with ice maker and water dispenser (fancy!).
