Thinking about #SAAllies / #SAAlly at #Shax2019 and two conference experiences that, anecdotally, demonstrate how important allies can be. At one conference, I was one of two Latinx women on a panel. It was the last panel fo the day. Everyone was tired. 1/6

I felt terrible afterwards and could not shake it. I think had to muster up the energy to go the reception. The conference overall was lovely, one of my favorites I have been to, but that was a moment for an ally. 3/6

At another conference where I was a very ECR, a well-known senior scholar with an abrupt persona asked me a question about the was I was talking about race in my paper. I answered, but not satisfied, she followed up. It was clear I was not understanding what she was asking. 4/6

Sujata Iyengar recognized the disconnect and jumped in with a clarification that allowed me to answer with more polish and grace. THAT was an ally. She did not take the moment away or speak for me. She helped me find a way to speak for myself. 5/6

I share these moments to say that I think it is wonderful how the conversation about allyship is not just relegated to social events but rather extends to how we approach ALL parts of the conference. 6/6
