Serendipitously published in time for (though this isn’t about pure inclusion) - my take and advice for tackling inequalities in gov service teams through intersectionality

I wish recruiters stopped asking "What is your expected salary" My response "I gauge how serious a comp is about hiring me based on what they provide. I look forward to hearing what they are offering. You can share your range + I'll let you know if I'd continue this conversation"

This. And assuming that the policy tradition in gov won't change quickly (or ever, given sticky legacies), then this is where we start to the very real limits of "digital transformation". It's also why people in my world need to rethink what they teach future policy analysts.

Things I wish I had focused more when I first learned to code and maybe you should too 🤷🏾‍♀️: A 🧵 1. using git for EVERY PROJECT. Just learn the basics. Push, pull, branches, clone etc. It won't take long to learn the basics if you do them consistently.

THIS. Gets to the heart of my passion for toolkits, ‘facilitating structures’, reflection tools, and so on. Thinking better, together. This muscle needs to be developed at all levels & scales. Changing one person or a team can ripple throughout a larger system... /ht

This is something where designers have an advantage over some paths such as project management - making decisions in ambiguity is default in design but often punished in project management

welp. either they overpaid at $60k for something that would have worked fine on Google Forms or they underpaid at $60k for an actual app, meaning no kind of usability or stress testing. take your pick; I look forward to the blog posts.

Morning! Quick reminder that if your doesn't include code it's actually documentation. Your documentation might describe your visual language (which is a system of sorts), but a is both documentation *and* tooling to deliver that language.

I am that much of a google sheets nerd (hello female bloodline of accountants) that the only reason I’m not attending this is because google docs is blocked on work machines :(

service design well is about stepping back and seeing patterns and connections (rather than being too close and fixating on one thing)

A big idea is better than a big plan - big bold ideas that inspire people to action will bring them along with you. Then you can make a plan

A framework or model is an excellent way to learn the most basic parts of a new idea because it’s purposefully reductive. It takes things away, emphasizing only a small part of a large whole, so that we can focus only on what remains.

simplicity vs complexity - simplicity is a process, doing things like maps (by nature incomplete but useful)
