    Two Bureau of Prisons employees working without pay—guards at California federal prisons who say they’re overworked & make considerably less than staff @ private prisons—told me they’re sick of being used as “pawns” by the President & Congress. Both used the same word.

    Spoke with a furloughed DHS staffer this week who said he was planning to buy a house this year but b/c of shutdown has had to dip into savings and may not be able to.

    DHS staffer also said he & coworkers were advised if they want to take an additional job during shutdown, they have to run it by ethics office for approval. But they’re not sure if the ethics office is even staffed to approve their requests.
