how is it that i see so many people model electron orbitals with such ease, yet i've never seen a visual depiction of a photon, a proton, a quark etc... how is the math for calculating stable orbitals different from the math for other stable quantum structures?

I’m not an expert but I can give a few reasons. First, it’s a simplified model treating the electron as a quantum particle (instead of a quantum field). Also, quarks have more complicated interactions, though, you can find visualizations if you search lattice qcd

The trouble is that there are to many dimensions would be needed to visualise this clearly. We can do a two level (such as electron spin) system with a photon as did 7 of https://arxiv.org/pdf/1809.10564.pdf …
